Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS)

Volunteers in Police Service is just that—citizens providing no-cost support to their state, county, or local police agencies. If you have even one volunteer currently helping your law enforcement agency, you already have a VIPS program in place!

Volunteers in Police Service is a program within the Citizen Corps that allows local residents to offer their time and talents to their local law enforcement agency. Much like any other volunteer opportunity, VIPS meets both the volunteer's desire to serve and the agency's need for additional resources.

VIPS is different from other volunteer programs because volunteers work in and for law enforcement agencies enhancing a variety of activities.

The VIPS program is a logical outgrowth of the growing trend of community policing initiatives nationwide. Community- or problem-oriented policing programs have built strong bridges between law enforcement agencies and the citizens they serve. A logical expansion of this collaboration is to allow citizens to engage with their local law enforcement agencies to work together even more closely, and enhance policing services.

The national VIPS Program also provides support to police agencies interested in starting a volunteer program. Through this website, and additional services to be developed shortly, VIPS can help local agencies determine their volunteer needs, and to design a program that will effectively meet those needs.

The Carnation-Duvall Citizen Corps Council VIPS program is soliciting (1) program volunteers, and (2) program administrators. To join Volunteers in Police Service or to help the administration of our local VIPS program, contact vips@carnationduvallcitizencorps.org.
